KOCHI: City police probing the murder of Vaiga Sanu has concluded — after nearly14 days of evidence collection and custodial interrogation of the accused Sanu Mohan, the father of the child — that he killed her to sever all his links with his past life so that he could start a fresh one.
Police said that the man was an ambitious person and wanted to live life to the fullest.
“He claimed that his plan was to kill himself, but that never happened. He told us that he knew nothing about the alcohol presence in the child’s body but we found an alcohol bottle from his car and that he gave it to her by mixing it with cola. After escaping, he was engaged in gambling and watching movies and it was very unlikely that a person under tremendous pressure like he claims, would behave that way. Our investigation has found that he was well-planned and he will receive punishment for this crime,” said a top cop with the city police.
Mohan was presented in the court on Monday on expiry of his police custody period and was remanded to judicial custody.
Economic offences wing of the Mumbai police have already recorded his formal arrest in a cheating case to the tune of Rs 3 crore, but they could not take him into custody due to some technical error in their petition submitted in the court on Monday, said source with the city police.
Mohan was arrested on April19 and was granted in police custody for 10 days on the same day. City police had taken him to various locations in the country, including Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Goa, Salem, Kollur, for evidence collection.
During the evidence collection, police had visited the place where he sold his car and gold ornaments to fund his travel while in hiding.
In Goa, police had visited a casino in which he gambled, days after the murder.
Police also investigated the claim of the accused that he attempted suicide while he was on the run and found that the claim was prima-facie false.
According to the statement of the accused, he smothered the child at his flat and later pushed her into the Muttar river while she was unconscious. The child was found dead in the river on March 23.
