Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will make an official trip to Egypt from September 19–20, 2022, in an effort to strengthen defence cooperation and the unique friendship between India and Egypt.
According to a news release from the Defence Ministry, he will meet with General Mohamed Zaki, Minister of Defence and Defense Production, during his visit. The two Ministers will evaluate their military cooperation and explore new ideas to strengthen military-to-military contacts.
The announcement further stated that an MoU would be signed to provide India and Egypt’s defence cooperation even more momentum.
The Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi will also get a call from the defence minister.
India and Egypt set a five-year goal earlier in July to grow their annual bilateral commerce from USD 7.26 billion to USD 12 billion.
When senior officials from the two nations met in Cairo on July 25–26, 2022, they decided to increase bilateral trade.
With a current Indian investment of USD 3.15 billion in Egypt, it is one of the top investment locations in the area for India. Numerous projects are still being carried out by Indian enterprises in Egypt.
A delegation from the Indian Air Force also travelled to Egypt on June 22 to take part in a bilateral “Tactical Leadership Programme” with the Egyptian Air Force in order to strengthen defence cooperation between the two nations.
Chief of Air Staff Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari travelled to Egypt earlier in November of last year for a five-day tour in order to attend the Air Power Symposium and Defence Exposition (EDEX) in Cairo.
The dates for this event were November 28 to December 2.
Since 2022 is the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Egypt and India, it bears special significance.
India and Egypt also have friendly defence ties. The 1960s saw efforts to jointly build a fighter aircraft as a result of strong Air Force cooperation. From the 1960s to 1984, IAF pilots also trained Egyptian pilots. Since 2015, there have been a number of high-level visits and interactions between defence delegations.
