Elon Musk, who has been under fire for recent policy changes at Twitter Inc., is asking people if he ought to resign as the company’s CEO.

Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll.

14 million votes have been cast with around four hours to go, and 57% of participants have chosen yes. He promised in a tweet on Sunday that he would follow the poll’s results. The billionaire is also the CEO of Tesla Inc. In the US, “VOTE YES” and “CEO of Twitter” were three of the top trending items from the previous night.

Musk tweeted out his poll during the Argentina vs. France World Cup championship game while he was in Qatar. He also apologised for not having done so earlier and promised to establish a vote for any significant policy changes in the future.

Following his acquisition of Twitter, Musk has faced criticism for the extensive changes he made to the social media platform, including firing more than half of its staff and allowing previously banned accounts to reappear. He has also come under pressure to concentrate more on Tesla, whose stock price has been falling. He has devoted a lot of his time to the social media platform since reluctantly completing the Twitter acquisition at the end of October.

After tussling with journalists, some of Twitter’s most involved and active contributors, he continued tweeting late into the night on Thursday. On the grounds that they were doxxing his whereabouts, the business barred a number of them from influential media including the Washington Post and CNN. The American Civil Liberties Union and even the United Nations condemned the action, labelling it a “dangerous precedent.”

Twitter also made a policy change over the weekend that it later rescinded, banning accounts “created primarily” to advertise rival social networks. After at least one well-known account was suspended as a result of that choice, Musk immediately announced that the rules will be changed.

Later, the Twitter Safety account posted a poll asking users if the service should have a rule banning accounts that promote other social media sites.
